Nigel Lythgoe Weighs in on Will Leaving the Competition
TV Guide got the reaction from executive producer and head judge of So You Think You Can Dance, Nigel Lythgoe after Will’s elimination on Thursday. Apparently, I’m not the only person to be outraged by the audience’s vote. (Or lack thereof…)
According to the article, when Will’s name was announced as joining the bottom two men:
When the moment of truth arrived during last week’s results show, here’s what the audience didn’t see: Lythgoe putting his head down on the judges’ table as if he couldn’t bear to watch what was going to happen next.
That’s a similar reaction to the one I had when I watched and I’m sure it was much like that of most of the viewers…why didn’t people vote for Will? Or Twitch?
I totally expected for Mark to go home last week. And possibly Joshua this week. But having their fate in the hands of the home audience is such a crap shoot. People tend to assume that the most talented wil automatically get the most votes and they rally to try to save the underdog…and it often backfires. (Remember Sabrina Bryan being sent home so early in the Dancing With the tars season?)
Nigel went on to say this:
“To me, it’s very much like losing Chris Daughtry or Tamyra Gray from American Idol,” Lythgoe said after the show. “Either one of them leaving — Will or Twitch — was a big disappointment. I really thought Will, Twitch and Joshua would be fighting it out until the end.”
The moral of the story, my friends, is that you never assume that the favorite will get the votes. And if you think someone is the most deserving, they should get your votes! Plain and simple.
Or, the judges should take back the power to decide who goes home each week right up until the end. That’s the only way to make sure that the most deserving person wins.

I def agree Will was the most talent guy on the show. But I do think that Mark and Joshua have great personalities that make watching them dance such a joy…

I think that voters were not so taken with Will as the judges what with all the over the top compliments and such out and out favoritism shown him. As for the remaining dancers, why does Twitch keep drawing hip-hop and Mark all the lousy dance styles and lowest rated partners? This show is fixed and slanted. The only thing they do not seem to fix is the voting result.

I think the judges should decide until the very end (the top 4) because people always get it wrong! And also, PLEASE - the people who run the camera RUIN the show with all their weird angles. I miss half the routines because the camera angles are so poor!! I really love this show, and what kills it is the judges not deciding as well as not being able to see the whole dances.

I could not believe anyone could possible think Will the least talented of the dancers.
I was very angry at the show, saying I would not watch it again because of what happened.
Nigel and the other judges should read the post on Fox’s website.
People are furious.
I liked Mark, but he was the least talented of the fourth left. Could it have been because of the dances he was given to perform, possibly.
I tried to vote, could not get through as many on Fox’s website said. Also, the numbers you needed to vote were not listed anywhere on the site. So I only had two, Will and Twitch. But it didn’t matter, because I couldn’t get through.
In the event someone thinks I am supporting Will because he is black, forget it, I am White, but I believe in fairness.
Courtney was brought back onto the show and I don’t care how they do it, Will should be brought back too.
Also, leaving it up to the audience to determine who is the best dancer, really makes it a popularity contest, and that is not what this show is about.
The professional judges should be the only votes counted after the final 10 are established.
I was and still am sick about the results.

there is no way will should be gone. he was the most talented male dancer. his departure ensures that a female dancer will win it all

I was horrified that Will did not get enough votes to stay on the show. I wish that the voters could decide the bottom 4. And then the judges could decide which two stay out of that bottom 4. I would feel better about that. What a great show !!!!

What was America thinking?? Will over Mark? Even Mark was shocked that he stayed and I think he thought he should have gone home. Decisions like this should be made by the judges who vote on pure talent. I agree that allowing America to vote turns it into a popularity contest which is not fair to the truly talented who deserve to win.
